What is The Universal Reading Method?

The Universal Reading Method is a radical new approach to reading that transforms challenged readers into confident and competent post high school readers after only two hours of instruction. Our online course is designed to bring the joy of reading to people of all ages who may face daily changes in decoding the printed word and pronouncing all of the sounds in the English language.

To date, thousands of people have been taught, from all over the word, individually and in groups of up to forty, with our Universal Reading Method.  The majority of our students have experienced a major transformation, both in their reading and in their attitude towards their life from our method – as seen in our testimonials and results from pre- and post-testing.  We’re confident it will transform almost any challenged reader.

The Universal Reading Method facilitates the easy transfer of the spoken and listening vocabulary into recognizing those words in written text by the learning of all letter sounds and sound combinations, knowing when a vowel is long or short and easily determining when to pause between syllables.

After easily learning our first six concepts during the first hour, at the end our learners master the 40 exceptions. After learning the URM the learner is able to speak, read and comprehend the written English word much in the same way they do when someone is reading to them and/or telling them a story.

The process is significantly activated during a 15 minute walk and break from the instruction and a 15 minute self review of the information presented during the video instruction. During these two exercises the information taught during the video is consolidated into the brain and provides our learner a forever ability to read all words they have spoken and heard spoken to them..

The process activates our learners peaceful receiving of information versus being forced to digest information during an exercise that requires memorization of countless rules and the all of the words they attempt to comprehend. During this process, it has been observed, by a neuroscientist, that several, before dormant and unconnected, parts of the brain that involve speech, sound recognition and optical response may be connecting via neuropathways thus allowing the brain a more comprehending ability to read and pronounce English words. The learner during our instruction, realizes there are no words they cannot pronounce in their English language. Successful word challenge quickly transforms into successful Life challenge. There is now a formula for reading words and an invitation to seek a formula for solving life’s, before appearing impossible, challenges.

Included in the transformation from a challenged reader to a confident, competent reader there is also a significant transformation in personality and self-esteem.

The National Commission on Adult Literacy (in Reach Higher, America) presents powerful evidence that our failure to address America’s adult education and workforce skill needs is putting our country in great jeopardy and threatening our nation’s standard of living and economic viability. The Commission recommends immediate action to reverse the course we are on. It calls for strong, bold leadership from federal and state governments, and it challenges business leaders, philanthropy, and the nonprofit sector to become part of the solution.

Universal Reading Method™ is providing a large part of the ‘solution to illiteracy’ that our nation is in search of.

In addition, we are proud to announce we are an Evidenced Based Reading Method, having traveled across the United States, Canada, the UK and Hawaii transforming over a thousand learners into confident and competent readers. We will soon be able to explain the changes in the brain we are observing, and become Scientifically Research Based. The University of California at San Diego has funded a Brain Imaging Study based on the recommendation Barry Schwartz PhD (neuroscience) . The Universal Reading Method we teach was designed and developed by Doug Collins, who was reading challenged until the age of 30, where after making this discovery graduated at the top of his class in Law School.

Doug has stumbled upon a learn-to read phenomenon and Craig, at first, skeptical, has searched for and now personally transformed thousands of challenged readers all over the world: online, one to one, in person and in an ESL classroom of 18; in 4 classrooms of 39 Jr. High foreign students, without parents in the home who speak or read English; on SKYPE with Learners online; and, to learners, in person, with our Universal Reading Method Video which allows us to teach any number of learners at one time.

We have now launched our Online Universal Reading Method and are very pleased to provide the same success to our learners without any supervision, in their own home. We have observed when a teacher is present he/she becomes several concepts. Our online Universal Reading Method eliminates this issue between the student and the instructor, and allows us to maintain our strict requirement to provide our students with only 7 learning concepts. We are impressed with the amazing transformation of our learners and believe you will be, too!

The most unique and impressive aspect to our Universal Reading Method is that we transform our students, many with just a 4th grade reading level, to reading and comprehending 475 multi-syllable words from a list of GED post high school word, in one, 2 1/2 hour period of instruction.

No other reading method can make this claim and in fact, we have not found any reading method that even claims they are able to transform a challenged reader into a confident, competent reader in this period of time.. As our brain imaging research provides us with the date we are excited to explain to you in more detail the changes the reorganization that is taking place in many parts of the brain during our instruction.

Our learners, after learning our Universal Reading method our learners exert very little effort when sounding out words so there comprehension of the writing flows easily and they become fluent immediately.

Doug Collins was a challenged reader for more than 30 years. As he searched for a solution to his own reading challenge, he studied every reading method he could find. It wasn’t until he discovered the Seven Concepts in the Universal Reading Method and that there were approximately 72 sounds that letters make that he began to teach other challenged learners to read. In the other reading method’s he reviewed there were just too many rules to memorize and exceptions to learn. As he taught other challenged learners he realized it was easy for them to learn to read with the seven concepts and that as they learned to read it had a significant impact on their self-confidence and ability to concentrate and comprehend.
