I was very suspicious when I first heard about the Universal Reading MethodTM since many teachers, using many different reading methods, had tried to teach me and I had failed. In my efforts to build up my confidence to try one last time to learn how to read, I sent my son Randall, who was also dyslexic and had taken ten years to complete college, to San Diego to meet Doug Collins and let him attempt to teach him how to read. After Randall learned within less than two hours how to read and reported to me his amazement of being able to finally read multi-syllable words and legal documents with ease, I decided then, possibly, I could too.

My 12 year old son, Alexander, could read before the lesson with Craig, words that he knew by sight. However, was terribly embarrassed, frustrated and intimidated by words that were new and unfamiliar. So much so, that he would avoid reading like the plague, which affected his school work, but more importantly his confidence and self esteem.
The day before the Universal Reading Method session he had stated, “No, I am not doing it! I'm NOT going!” And cried, “No, I can't do it! I can't read!”

Knowing the above, you can imagine how emotional and grateful I was and still am, as I watched him transform before my eyes during the lesson. His somber face changed to one full of delight and amazement, as he tackled and read words he didn't know and self pride was bursting out of him.

It was as if a door that had previously been bolted shut, sprung open and my son's self-belief returned. At the end I could hardly speak without welling up in tears. I am so proud of my son.

The results:

After we returned home, my son asked me to buy him a book...well...imagine the swell in my heart. Not only that, he reread the list of words from Craig to his Dad, read a couple of pages of one book and a chapter of another. He has read stories to his younger siblings.

Overall he is a whole lot happier and more himself than he has been for a very long time. Alexander said, “I'm glad that my Mum made me go, because now I can read words I don't know and it feels good.” To someone who has difficulty with reading, Alexander says “I would definitely tell them to do it. It's good!” Thank-you so much Craig.

Yours in gratitude, Elizabeth and Alexander, 12 years old

I'm in the school system. I see what happens to students who are struggling readers. I also see low level readers remain that way even after years of the ``evidence-based`` programs. What is need is a new approach. What is needed is the URM! I, in all my years as an educator, have never seen such a concise, logical way of going about the improvement of reading skills in such a short amount of time. Im so proud to be a part of this. Back in December, I worked with a friend's second grader (7 to 8 years old) as a favor and to get some practice with teaching the URM like you advised.

She isn't local, so I did screen share of the Universal Reading Method with Skype. She was TEXTBOOK dyslexic from what I could tell as an educator. Her fluency was terrible.

I did the URM with her and she practiced. I checked in with her again the following week, and her fluency was improving.

Anyway, mom then said she was getting her evaluated for dyslexia, and we would continue to work together when she got all the results. Well, her test results came back this past week, and NO DYSLEXIA.

Craig, I KNOW, and I shared this with her mom.....I KNOW it was the neuro effects of the URM. It had to be. And her fluency improved as well.

After pre-testing my niece and determining she was reading at a 3rd grade level, with difficulty reading, even mono-syllable words, Craig taught my niece the Universal Reading Method™ in less than 2 1/2 hours and then I watched her read 300+ multi-syllable words and score in the post high school reading level. It brought tears to my eyes. My niece is twelve and entering the sixth grade.
